Expect the unexpected - A concert review by Katrin Wagner:
Last night at 8 pm I received a
phonecall from Henry, saying that he noticed this concert wasn't
mentioned on my homepage and asking whether we could come to it.
The reason why it wasn't on my homepage is quite simple: we
didn't know about it. So I was rather surprised to find out that
it's not even very far from us, only 120 km away in the small
East German town Bad Salzungen.
It reminds me of my golden SAILOR rule number one: Expect the
unexpected...
So, of course, Karsten and I have decided to drive and meet at my
flat at 2.30 pm to start our journey. We're both not well today,
and I've had a horrible migraine all day, but we just don't want
to miss this concert, having not seen SAILOR with Oliver back in
the band.
And so we're on the road a little later and all goes well, until
I get very sick, first on the motorway and then again shortly
before we reach our destination. Fortunately, after that, I at
least start to feel a little better.
SAILOR haven't arrived at their hotel yet, so that we wait for
the rain to stop and then walk over to the market place where the
city festival will start at 7.30 pm. And, approaching the stage,
we can already see the three Marsh boys... and Phil too. We watch
and film SAILOR's soundcheck and are more pleasantly surprised by
the great sound.
After the soundcheck we briefly say hello to the boys and then
return to the city festival while they have dinner with the
promoter of the show. We also decide to find something to eat and
drink while we wait for SAILOR's show to start at 10.30 pm.
When it's finally time for "our boys" we rush to the
front of the stage and then enjoy what we can only call a
fantastic SAILOR concert. It's great to hear Ollie's voice back
in SAILOR again, and Tom also does a great job on all songs.
We're only a little scared that the windows might break in all
surrounding buildings when he hits the drums. (Just kidding!)
In addition to the usual set we also get some more wonderful
SAILOR live-favourites like "Blame It On The Soft Spot"
and "Traffic Jam". Phil sings "Mack The
Knife" and "Karma Chameleon", and Henry is
responsible for the overall fun on stage, as usual.
At the end of the show, Tom plays a stunning drum solo and then
leaves the stage again, while the "Full Monty" is only
performed by Phil, Henry and Oliver... I think I shall call it
the "Threesome" from now on! And yes, I said I'd be
kind of ok with "Wooly Bully" being back now... but
play the song twice instead of a SAILOR-encore?? Oh well. They
know what I think.
The amazing quality and fun of this whole show just makes me wish
that we were surrounded by more loyal SAILOR fans and friends who
could enjoy this feeling too...
After the show we meet the SAILORs again at their hotel. Tom and
Ollie are off to an after-show-party nearby, while Phil and Henry
stay with Karsten and us and talk for a while.
Then, after a long tiring drive, we're home at 4.30 am... I guess
it's time for some homepage updates after some sleep, eh?!
