Translation of a text about DATA fom 1984:
SOUND STORY
1 : DATA
Facts about DATA
The last year brought the revenge of the old pop stars.
Elton John, Rod Stewart and all the other old rock-fossils could
enjoy a chart-comeback because of a steady lack of ideas of the
newer groups. Another survivor of the last decade - ex SAILOR
Georg Kajanus - now tries to leave the shaddows of the big stars
in order to get back into the peoples´ memories. -
When the band SAILOR
stopped to exist in the year 1975, Georg Kajanus turned to
electronic music and released the LP "Opera
Electronica", which, only published in Germany, is not known
by a larger part of the listeners, with the help of the sisters
Phil and Frankie Boulter. In spite of this a related song became
the soundtrack of the movie "The Towers Of Babel" and
won a price at the "Berliner Filmfestspiele". Further
tries lead to the single "Fallout" and to a second
album named "2 Tone", which was released by the band
that had meanwhile become a duo.
Although Georg and Frankie are not well-known in the English-
speaking areas yet, they believe in their break-through in 1984.
The first indication for this is the single "Living Inside
Me" that has already been accepted by the spoiled audiences
of the clubs in New York and that has influences the sellings of
the album in a positive way.
But we want to start right at the beginning, and so I
first ask Georg about the reasons for the splitting of SAILOR.
Nevertheless it has been a very successful band.
"I had a feeling that we had become more a cabaret- act than
a band. Most of the people came only to see our
"steam-piano". Nobody had been interested in our music
any more. Another reason has probably been that we had moved into
one particular direction and had one specific sound. Our image
had become quite restricted. That´s why I told myself to leave
as fast as possible, because musical stagnation means suicide for
an artist."
This answer comes without hesitation. this show that Georg
Kajanus is an "oldtimer" of the music-business who
already had to "bear" lots of interviews. But he will
also have to cope with the reproach that his dedication to
computer-music follows the latest trends. Moreover the topical
line-up of DATA shows parallels to the successful concept of
Yazoo or the Eurythmics. But all this cannot impress Frankie, the
lively second half of the duo.
"Of course we know that many people are going to compare us
with our "heroes". But this doesn´t fright us. Firstly
we are very good", says Frankie with a convinced voice,
"and secondly it is difficult to copy Yazoo or the
Eurythmics. They made their very own music." After a short
moment she starts to smile and admits: "Maybe we are similar
to the Eurythmics.....but not very much."
The people who still remember SAILOR will also remeber their
visual impressive live shows of the band. How does Georg want to
include these elements in his new electropop-show?
"That is quite a huge problem for us", admits Georg,
"which we could not solve yet. But we keep on working on the
combination of acoustic and musical impressions. We are
optimistic."
For the next year DATA are planning to continue their success of
their electro-beat and to evoke the audience´s interest. And
even if the name of the band seems to be not the best choice for
the year 1984: many people like to dance, especially in bad
times.
Translation of the text promoting the "Living Inside Me" / "A-O (No Bungalow)" single: DATA In 1974 Georg
Kajanus formed the band SAILOR that released three
successful albums until their separation in 1976 and that
belonged to the most famous pop-acts of this genre
especially in Germany. After the split Georg Kajanus left
the pop-scene for a while in order to think about new
musical ways of expression. During the following time the
expressive singer and guitarist started to work on modern
and electronic music and finally formed a band DATA
together with the female singer Frankie Boulter. |
A text about DATA from www.thefirstcut.net:
It's very possible that many of
you have not heard of the band DATA. For some reason, they seemed
to have flown under the radar of a lot of electronic music
collectors. In may be due (at least in partial part) to the fact
that they never charted a song in the top 20 either here or in
the UK. Still, I can remember them getting pretty decent club
play back around '85.
DATA was formed in the late 70's, when Georg Kajanus left the
band Sailor to pursue releasing music that was much more
innovative than he felt Sailor could produce. Added to the DATA
mix were sisters Frankie and Phil (yes, they're women) Boulter,
with Frankie providing the vocals for the project. They released
their first LP Opera Electronica in 1981. The first single from
the album, titled "Fallout" was heard on September
28th, 1981 on the music program "Musicbox".
1983 saw the release of DATA's next album "2-Time". By
this point, due to their formula of electronic music with a
female vocalist, they were closely associated with their
then-contemporaries Yazoo and The Eurythmics. Both DATA albums
had received great critical review, but failed to break into the
US club scene. That would change with their next release.
Elegant Machinery was released in 1985, and spawned three
singles, all of which I can remember hearing in the clubs. The
first (and definitely most popular) single was "Blow"
(1985), followed by "Stop" (1985) and "Richocheted
Love" (1986). To be perfectly honest, the entire album is an
absolute gem. If you ever have the chance to pick it up, don't
hesitate.
What you are going
to do now
Where are you going to go
You always had the answers on your phone-in show
It's never going to happen
Or so you did say
For no one really wants it
But here we are today
With a fallout - it's a fallout
You'd better run
for a shelter
And put yourself in a fallout suit
You'd better get yourself used to
Just living in a fallout suit
A sattelite clockwork information is going to give you the
duration
Of the fallout
So what we are
going to do now
now that it's here
But listen to you talking about the after care
Living in boxes
Covered in lead
In three feet of concrete
To keep us from the dead
it's a fallout - it's a fallout
You'd better run
for a shelter
And put yourself in a fallout suit
You'd better get yourself used to
Just living in a fallout suit
A sattelite clockwork information is going to give you the
duration
Of the fallout
Stay in the light
so I can see you
Try, with your eyes, to make me believe you
But it's clear at a time like this
To see just what we miss
With our empty coversation
We've tried to patch it over
But it's all wrong when the feeling's gone
In love, you've
made me cry
I life, you've passed me by
I've had you living in my fantasy
Lovers downfall, lovers like me
Ricocheted love
Try to make your
way
For I must be leaving
It's time to say goodbye
Not just for the evening
Our love has come to this
For even in your kiss there's none of that sensation
But trials can only bruise you
And it's all wrong when the feeling's gone
In love, you've
made me cry
I life, you've passed me by
I've had you living in my fantasy
Lovers downfall, lovers like me
Ricocheted love
Our love has come
to this
For even in your kiss there's none of that sensation
But trials can only bruise you
And it's all wrong when the feeling's gone
In love, you've
made me cry
I life, you've passed me by
I've had you living in my fantasy
Lovers downfall, lovers like me
Ricocheted love - ricocheted love
Many thanks to Norbert Lorenz for collecting and scanning the covers and to Gerd Schwonke for the DATA promotion pictures!
